Bill serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the firm as well as Chairman of the Board.  Based in the Greensboro office, he oversees client relationships, assists in new business development efforts, and works directly with many of Trust Company’s not-for-profit clients.  A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, he has over twenty-five years’ experience in the financial services and wealth management industry.  After co-founding the firm in 1992, Bill joined Trust Company in 1995 after an eight year career with a number of closely held businesses in the fields of commercial finance and real estate development.

He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Elon University, and is a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the Piedmont Triad Partnership and the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation (the host organization for the Wyndham Championship).

Bill graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Economics (1988) and the College for Financial Planning (1999).  Bill and his wife, Sue, have one daughter and live in Greensboro.  In his spare time, Bill enjoys reading, playing golf, and spending time with his family and friends.

Jay is a Certified Public Accountant and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™.  He joined Trust Company in 2008 after more than eleven years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP where he was a Director in the Personal Financial Group. He is a Wealth Advisor in Charlotte, responsible for working directly with our clients to provide integrated wealth management solutions.   Jay graduated in 1996 from Alfred University with a B.S. in Accounting and studied at The London School of Economics.

Jay was involved with the First Tee of Greater Charlotte for nine years; he served as treasurer of this organization for several years.   He is also a present committee member and past committee chair of the Queens University Estate Planners Day.

Jay and his wife, Lindsey, have two children. They are active members in their church in which he is a founding member.   He has also coached numerous sports teams through various local youth associations.

Jonathan serves as a Wealth Advisor for Trust Company’s Raleigh office. He is primarily responsible for providing integrated wealth management counsel and solutions for our clients.

Prior to joining Trust Company, Jonathan worked in the Wells Fargo Private Bank and in the Personal Financial Services group of PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.  Jonathan is a Certified Public Accountant and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the North Carolina Association of CPAs, and the Raleigh Financial Planning Association.

Jonathan graduated magna cum laude from East Carolina University with a B.S. in Economics and an M.S. in Accounting. He also holds an MBA degree from the East Carolina University College of Business.  In his spare time, Jonathan enjoys reading, being outdoors, and spending time with his family and friends. He and his wife, Katie, have two children and live in Cary, NC.

Matthew E. Hornaday, CPA

Matthew is Chief Operating Officer and a Principal in Trust Company’s Greensboro office.  In addition to managing client family relationships and several nonprofit client relationships, Matthew is also responsible for establishing and enhancing Trust Company’s operational controls, procedures and people systems, ensuring the continued financial strength and efficiency of the company.

Prior to joining Trust Company in May 2014, Matthew was a Director at HanesBrands focused on mergers and acquisitions and strategic initiatives, an Associate at Five Points Capital (formerly BB&T Capital Partners) and an Analyst at Wells Fargo Securities (formerly Wachovia Securities) . Matthew started his career with Grant Thornton and has also served on Young Life staff.  Matthew, a Certified Public Accountant, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Business Administration (2001) and a Master of Accounting (2002).

Matthew is active in the community and currently serves on the First Presbyterian Church (Winston-Salem) Missions Committee, Samaritan Ministries (homeless shelter) Major Gifts team, and the Summit School Board of Trustees.  He and his wife, Catherine, have two children and live in Winston-Salem.  In his spare time, Matthew enjoys spending time with his family, enthusiastically supporting Tar Heel football and basketball teams, and playing golf and tennis.

Carter is a Wealth Analyst in Trust Company’s Greensboro office and joined the firm in April 2016.  Carter provides support across functional areas including relationship management and investments (portfolio management).  In addition, Carter leads Trust Company’s 401(k) platform.  In May 2015, Carter graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business with a degree in Finance.

Carter is a native of Greensboro and enjoys reading, traveling, and exercising in his free time.  Other than the Triad, Carter’s favorite place in the state is the North Carolina coast.

Scott is an Associate Wealth Advisor in Trust Company’s Charlotte office. He provides comprehensive tax and financial planning services for corporate executives, closely-held business owners, and high net worth individuals and families.

Scott, a native of Charlotte, graduated cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a B.S. in Business Administration in 2009 and a Masters of Accounting in 2011. Scott is a Certified Public Accountant and also a member of the North Carolina Association of CPAs. Prior to joining Trust Company in 2015, Scott worked at a large local public accounting firm specializing in tax services for high net worth individuals and closely-held businesses.

Scott and his wife, Sarah, live in Charlotte and in their spare time enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors.

Mitchell H. Paul, CPA

In his role as a Wealth Advisor, Mitchell is primarily responsible for providing integrated wealth management counsel and solutions for our clients.

Mitchell is a Certified Public Accountant with over thirty years of experience in the financial services and wealth management industry.  He is based in our Greensboro office.

Prior to joining Trust Company in 2008, Mitchell was a Managing Director in the Raleigh office of U.S. Trust Company.  He was part of the National Multi-Family Office Group, responsible for delivering holistic and integrated solutions to meet the complex, multi-generational needs of wealthy individuals and families.  Before joining U.S. Trust Company in 2005, he was a partner and member of the Management Committee at The Todd Organization where he was responsible for all aspects of client service and managed a staff of over 60 professionals.  Prior to that, he spent eight years at Arthur Andersen & Co. in the tax division.

Mitchell graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Business Administration (with a concentration in Accounting) in 1984.

Mitchell and his wife, Amy, have three children and two grandchildren.

Chase is an Associate Wealth Advisor who joined Trust Company in June 2018. Primarily, he serves family and nonprofit clients by providing sound financial planning and investment advice. Chase came to Trust Company from PNC Bank’s Institutional Asset Management group in Pittsburgh, PA where he was a senior investment advisor. Prior to that, Chase was a partner and investment manager at an independent Registered Investment Advisor firm based in Texas, his home state.

In 2013, Chase earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Additionally, he is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. His industry experience exceeds ten years and includes working with wealthy families, endowments and foundations, non-profits, corporations, and a variety of retirement plans. Chase graduated from Baylor University with a B.B.A. in Economics and Financial Services and Planning.

Chase is a member of the CFA Society of North Carolina. His wife, Lauren, is an accounting professor at her alma mater Wake Forest University. They have one daughter and reside in Winston-Salem.

Lindsey is an Associate Wealth Advisor who joined Trust Company of the South in September 2018. Previously she worked as a Private Wealth Advisor at Asset Management Advisors, a Registered Investment Advisor in Houston, Texas. She provides comprehensive financial planning services for corporate executives, closely-held business owners, and high net worth individuals and families.

Lindsey earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Portland State University and she has been a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional since 2015.

Originally from Oregon, Lindsey and her husband, Bryan, enjoy tennis, running and exploring all that the Carolinas have to offer. They reside in Charlotte with their rescued dogs and cats.

Chris is a Certified Public Accountant. He joined Trust Company of the South in 2008 after more than fourteen years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP where he was a Director in their Personal Financial Services group. He is a Wealth Advisor in Charlotte, responsible for working directly with our clients to provide integrated wealth management solutions. Chris graduated in 1994 from Clemson University with a B.S. in Accounting.

Chris served on the board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central & Western North Carolina for 12 years. He was Board Chair for two years and served several years as Treasurer. He has also volunteered his time at Levine Children’s Hospital.

Chris and his wife, Amy, have three children. They are active members in their church where Chris has served in many leadership roles, most recently as Chair of the Missions Council.  He has also coached numerous basketball and soccer teams in various local youth associations.

Leah Jane joined Trust Company’s Raleigh office in May 2017 as a Client Services Officer. She carries the designation of Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor and began her wealth management career at UBS Financial Services. Leah Jane is responsible for client relationship and account administration, including assistance with financial planning and asset management.

A native of Charlotte, Leah Jane moved to the Raleigh area to attend NC State University where she received a degree in Communication. Leah Jane and her husband, Dustin, live in Raleigh with their two dogs and enjoy cooking and gardening together in their free time.

After receiving his business degree from Furman University, John began his career on the retail brokerage side of the securities industry, specializing in Client Service and Sales Support.  John joined Trust Company of the South in 2013 as a Client Services Officer in the Charlotte office.  John is responsible for overseeing the administration of client relationships, including assistance with trading, tax returns, distributions, and asset management.

A native of Charlotte, John enjoys exercise and playing golf.

Lou’s career spans forty years in the banking industry, with a background in client service, management and compliance. She joined Trust Company in March 2017 as the Client Services Manager for the Greensboro, Raleigh, and Charlotte offices, and is based out of the Greensboro office. Lou’s responsibilities include managing the client services team, daily account administration, and assisting clients with various transactions.

Lou and her husband, Benjie, have one daughter and two cats.  Lou enjoys family time and travel, and as an advocate for animals, supports “Adopt, don’t shop”.

Shelly joined Trust Company in 2017 as a Client Services Officer in the Charlotte office. She has responsibilities in client services and wealth management, including assistance with account administration, asset management, distributions and tax returns.

A native of Raleigh, Shelly moved to Charlotte to attend Queens University to pursue a degree in Business Administration.

Leslie has spent the majority of her career in Business Administration and Human Resources.  In 2010, Leslie joined Trust Company as a Client Services Officer.  She currently works in our Greensboro office, and her responsibilities include new client account setup; assisting clients with distributions, deposits, charitable gifting, and account transfers; and routine account administration.

Leslie and her husband, Mike, live in Cedar Grove, NC with their two sons.  Leslie enjoys playing an active role in her sons’ school’s athletic programs, and is a huge fan of baseball and basketball at all levels.

After graduating from UNC-Greensboro with a business degree, Gail worked as a flight attendant for Piedmont and US Air.  She later spent several years as Financial Assistant at a private Christian school in Greensboro and joined the Client Services team in our Greensboro office in 2015.  Gail’s responsibilities include account administration and assisting clients with distributions and charitable gifts.

Gail has a son and a daughter who attend NC State University.  She enjoys community service and mission work through her church and other local organizations, as well as music and art events, entertaining family and friends, and traveling.

Michael is the Compliance Officer for Trust Company, and is based in the Raleigh office.  He is responsible for assuring compliance with North Carolina banking rules and regulations, federal BSA/AML laws and regulations, and sound fiduciary practices.  Michael is a Certified Fiduciary and Investment Risk Specialist™ and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™.  He has over twenty years of experience in the financial and wealth management industry.  Prior to joining Trust Company in 2017, Michael worked at State Employees’ Credit Union as Vice President of Trust Company Compliance and Administration.

Michael holds a B.A. from NC State University, a MMC from the University of Georgia, and an MBA from Gardner-Webb University.  He is an Honor Graduate of Cannon Financial Institute’s Trust Audit, Compliance, & Risk Management School, and a graduate of Campbell University’s Southeastern Trust School.  He also is a member of the Fiduciary and Investment Risk Management Association.

Michael lives in Raleigh with his wife, Jess, and their two dogs.  In his spare time he enjoys taekwondo, grilling good food, and attending college football games.

Heather joined Trust Company in December 2017 after spending twelve years as an Office Administrator in the legal field.  As the Administrative Manager of our Raleigh office, Heather provides the all-important first impression for Trust Company’s Raleigh clients on the phone and in person, as well as office management and executive administrative duties.

Heather and her husband enjoy spending time with their two daughters and grandson in addition to jogging and participating in various races in and around the Raleigh area.

In her role as Administrative Manager, Anna Kate is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of our Greensboro office and supporting our Principals.

Anna Kate joined the Trust Company in December of 2017 after six years in grocery retail marketing. She graduated from Western Carolina University in 2009 with a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Anna Kate and her husband, Matthew, live in Greensboro with their dog Luna. In her free time she enjoys yoga, reading, and spending time outdoors.

In his role as Director of Client Development, Bill is responsible for the cultivation of new clients and ongoing relationship building of our existing clients. Bill is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary® with over thirty-two years of experience in the financial services and wealth management industries. He currently works with clients from all over the state out of our Raleigh office location. Prior to joining Trust Company over twenty years ago, Bill worked with Centura Banks, Inc. and Trident Financial Corporation as an officer and (series 7, 63 and 24) NASD registered securities principal.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1984) and The Southeastern Trust School of Campbell University (2000), Bill recently served as Chairman of the North Carolina Awards Committee. He has also been an active member or has served on the board of several professional and charitable organizations including The First Tee of the Triangle, Nash Community College Foundation, Eastern Carolina Estate Planning Council, and the Cub Scouts of America.

Bill loves music and golf and he and his wife, Terry, and their three adult children enjoy spending time together at the beach.

Daniel L. Tolomay, CFA

Dan works in the Raleigh office and is responsible for developing investment strategy and managing client portfolios. Prior to joining Trust Company of the South in 2008, Dan was a vice president at Smith Breeden Associates in Chapel Hill. His focus was on performance measurement and, earlier, performed analyses for the firm’s Financial Institutions Consulting Group. His career began as a financial analyst in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) unit of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Dan, a finance major with a secondary concentration in accounting, graduated magna cum laude from Saint Bonaventure University in 2001. He earned his CFA charter in 2007.

Dan and his wife, Kim, both grew up in central New York. They live in Durham with their two sons and Jack Russell terrier, Milo. Dan enjoys college basketball and, specifically, watching his alma mater and the Duke Blue Devils.

As Fiduciary Counsel, Westray oversees the firm’s legal matters, including its trust activities.  Westray also serves as a resource to the firm’s individual clients with regard to their estate planning matters and to our nonprofit clients with regard to compliance issues.

Prior to joining Trust Company of the South, Westray practiced law with Poyner Spruill LLP in their trusts and estates group. She has over fifteen years of experience advising clients in the areas of estate, generation-skipping transfer and gift tax planning, business succession planning, asset protection and estate and trust administration. Westray has been recognized in Business North Carolina Magazine’s “Legal Elite” for Tax and Estate Planning.

Westray graduated with honors from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in psychology (1990). She received her Juris Doctor degree from Wake Forest University as a member of the Law Review.

Westray and her husband, Glenn, have two sons and live in Raleigh. She volunteers at her sons’ school, is an avid sports fan and participant, and enjoys spending time with her family at the beach.

In her role as Chief Financial Officer, Wallace is responsible for the financial planning and reporting of the Company.  She also oversees the Human Resources function.  She is located in the Greensboro office.

Wallace is a Certified Public Accountant, and joined Trust Company in 2004 after an eight year career in public accounting with Arthur Andersen, and several years as a controller in a not-for-profit organization. She graduated with High Distinction from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Economics in 1987. She received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1990, and received an Elijah Watt Sells certificate in recognition of outstanding performance on the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination that same year.

Wallace and her husband, Greg, have two children.  In her spare time she is a voracious reader and an avid runner.

Brandon received a Chancellor’s Scholarship and graduated from Fayetteville State University with a B.S. in Business Administration, concentrating in Banking and Finance. Prior to joining Trust Company in 2004, he worked in the finance departments for both small and large corporations of various industries. As an Operations Officer in our Greensboro office, his major responsibilities include the daily settlement and reconciliation of stocks and mutual fund trades and positions, posting income, capital gains and the handling of cash disbursements and deposits.  Brandon has completed the Cannon Financial Institute Securities Operations I & II courses.

Brandon’s passions include singing and playing the guitar, motorcycles, martial arts, optimum nutrition, and exploring the great outdoors.

In his role as Operations Manager, Will is responsible for handling the daily settlement and reconciliation of DTC trades and positions, posting DTC income and corporate actions, coordinating transfers for the operations department, coordinating month end processing, and monitoring the work flow for the operations department.  He is located in the Greensboro Office.

Will joined Trust Company in June 2001 after graduating from Wofford College with a degree in Business Economics.  Will lives in Greensboro and in his free time enjoys traveling, exercising, and volunteering in the Greensboro community including serving on the Tournament Committee for the Wyndham Championship.

Cathy has spent the majority of her career in patient and client services.  She joined Trust Company in 2013 as a Client Services Officer, and now serves as an Operations Officer in our Greensboro office.   Her major responsibilities include the daily settlement and reconciliation of mutual fund trades and positions, posting mutual fund income and the handling of cash disbursements and deposits.

Cathy and her husband, Rodney, live in Elon.  She enjoys being outdoors and spending time with family.

Bradley V. Sutton

Brad joined Trust Company in 2000 upon graduating from UNC-Charlotte with a B.S. in Business Administration. As Director of Operations, his responsibilities include strategic development, management and oversight of all areas of the operations department, including serving as the liaison with the Company’s primary service providers. In addition, Brad also oversees and manages Trust Company’s correspondent banking relationships, in which Trust Company provides operations support to third party banks.  Brad is located in the Greensboro office.

Brad is an active member of the Innotrust Users Group, an organization of financial professionals using the Innotrust trust accounting platform provided by Innovest Systems, having previously served in the roles of president and treasurer of this organization. He has completed the Cannon Financial Institute Securities Operations I & II courses.

Brad enjoys spending time with family, cooking, and playing golf.  Brad and his wife, Elizabeth, have three children.

David D. Beischer

Mr. Beischer is President of Garden View Realty, Inc., a real estate development and property management firm in Durham, NC.  Garden View Realty is the master developer of the 1,100 acre Croasdaile Farm residential development in Durham which features both single-family and multi-family luxury homes and a one hundred acre continuing care retirement community, Croasdaile Village.   Mr. Beischer is also the Executive Director and a board member of the Fox Family Foundation which provides philanthropic support to the Triangle nonprofit community.  Mr. Beischer is a graduate of Williams College and the Wake Forest University School of Law.

Miltom E. Petty

Mr. Petty has been the Chief Financial Officer of Carolina Hosiery Mills, Inc. since June 1977, and also serves as a Director of Live Oak Bancshares, Inc.   He has held an active CPA license from the State of North Carolina for forty years, starting his career with a CPA firm in Burlington.  He is Treasurer of The Educational Foundation, Inc. in Chapel Hill, NC.   Mr. Petty graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973.

James B. Powell, MD

A Burlington native, Dr. Powell founded Biomedical Reference Laboratories, now known as Laboratory Corporation of America.  He has served as director on numerous boards including FirstSouth Bank as well as the North Carolina Trust Company, Duke University Medical Center, Elon University and the Alamance Foundation.  Dr. Powell was educated at Virginia Military Institute and Duke University Medical School.

Mr. Smith has served since 1980 as president of Villane, Inc., a firm specializing in real estate and early-stage equity and debt investments. More recently, he has been the general manager of Blue Chip Furniture, a North Carolina based upholstery furniture manufacturer. Mr. Smith earned a Master of Science degree in Finance from the University of Arizona in 1980 following the completion of his undergraduate education in 1978 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He has had scholarly articles published in “The Journal of Portfolio Management” and “Business Economics”.
